Bombardier Inc. plans to ramp up production over the next two years amid rising demand for private planes, as the business jet manufacturer tests how far it can push capacity. Swinging to a surprise profit in its latest quarter after nudging output up in 2021, the Montreal-based company aims to exceed last year's 120 aircraft deliveries in 2022 and boost them by another 15 to 20 per cent — up to 144 Global and Challenger planes — as soon as 2023.

'Feast or famine': How Bombardier became a TSX star in 2021

When #Bombardier first announced plans to launch the CSeries family of commercial jets in 2008, the company described the program as “game-changing.”
 
According to the news release, issued during the Farnborough International Airshow, the sleek, fuel-efficient airliners would build on Bombardier’s transportation expertise, which included light-rail vehicles and business jets.
 
The CSeries ultimately lived up to its “game-changing” expectations, but in ways Bombardier’s leadership could have never imagined.
 
Thirteen years later, after offloading its once-prized CSeries program and selling its regional plane and rail divisions, the Montreal-based firm has transformed into a pure-play business jet company.
 
And amid a pandemic that has seen demand for private travel surge, investors have rewarded Bombardier, sending its shares up roughly 250 per cent over 2021. The stock is now among the best performers on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Bombardier reports its third quarter 2021 results, demonstrates solid execution and strong cash flow performance

Business aircraft revenues of $1.4 billion, up 17% year-over-year, mainly driven by an improved delivery mix and continued strong aftermarket recovery as overall fleet flight hours surpass 2019 levels.
 
Adjusted EBITDA of $142 million (9.8% adjusted EBITDA margin), representing a year-over-year improvement of $58 million or 69% reflecting continued progress on the Global 7500 aircraft’s learning curve, cost structure improvements and an improved delivery mix. Reported EBIT from continuing operations for the quarter was $48 million.
 
Strong free cash flow generation of $100 million from continuing operations, representing an improvement of $747 million year-over-year. Reported cash flows from operating activities – continuing operations for the quarter was $156 million and net additions to PP&E and intangible assets – continuing operations for the quarter were $56 million.
 
Third quarter unit book-to-bill of ~1.7 and increased backlog by ~$500 million to $11.2 billion on account of continued strong order momentum.
 
Major milestone in deleveraging plan achieved with the redemption of debt maturities to December 2024, representing a total debt reduction of ~$3 billion since the beginning of 2021. Pro-forma liquidity remains strong at $1.9 billion.

Business jet revenues of $1.3 billion, up 18% year-over-year, mainly driven by a favourable mix of large-cabin aircraft deliveries, including eight Global 7500 aircraft

Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations of $123 million, up 43% year-over-year, reflecting an improved aircraft mix, Global 7500 aircraft learning curve progress and cost structure improvements; adjusted EBIT from continuing operations of $29 million. Reported EBIT from continuing operations for the quarter was $19 million

Free cash flow usage from continuing operations of $405 million, including ~ $100 million of non-recurring cash items, an improvement of $357 million year-over-year.
